With All His Might

Text:  II Samuel 6:9-16

Preface:   David assembled a large number of people together for the purpose of bringing the Ark of the Covenant home.  The first attempt failed by not following exact instructions that God himself had given (Numbers 4).  How often do we find ourselves in trouble because we do not follow God's way of doing things?

A.  The Ark Was Resting.
  1. The failed attempt to bring the Ark back was a tremendous failure for David.
  2. He stood helpless and observed the blessing of Jehovah on the House Obobededom (II Samuel 6:11).
  3. David wanted the blessing and had a genuine hunger for a move of the Spirit of God.
B.  Go After The Blessing.
  1. David was only able to stand idle for 90 days (II Samuel 6:11).
  2. This time David was determined to do as God ordered.
  3. God wants to bless His people today; but we must GO AFTER THE BLESSING.
C.  The Process.
  1. David went with all that were IN ACCORD (II Samuel 6:2).
  2. While the Ark was being transported, David did not allow anyone to touch the ANNOINTED (Numbers 4:15).
  3. Every 6 feet, David and the host offered SACRIFICES to God (II Samuel 6:13).
  4. David WORSHIPPED GOD WITH ALL HIS MIGHT (II Samuel 6:14).
  5. David did not allow anyone to stop or even hinder his mission or praise (II Samuel 6:16).

Note: This message was preempted by a mighty move of the Holy Spirit.

Text:  John 4:46-54

Preface:   In the text that we just read, an appointed officer of Herod Antipas, a Basilikos, had a son that was sick.  This officer of the Roman Army had evidently heard of Jesus Christ and His healing power.  We must never forget what Christ has done and will do for His children.

Preface:   In I Samuel 22 we read of David retreating to a cave and certainly not looking much like a King.  David never lost the will to succeed and accomplish the great calling that God had placed on his life.  Many obstacles hindered him for a short time but, he would receive his crown just as we will receive our crown in the future.

Conflicting Evidence

Text:  I John 1:7-8

Preface:   The church exists in a world in which there are many Spiritual counterfeits.  The work of the flesh is among those who claim to be filled with the Spirit.  This conflicting evidence is confusing to the honest seeker and can be deadly to those who are wavering in their faith.  Believers need to be reminded that it is not what they have but who has them that is important.  The conflicting claims mentioned in this study are sins against the Holy Spirit, and will hinder any Spiritual growth.

A.  Grieving The Spirit.
  1. Ephesians 4:30 tells us that we may grieve the Spirit by our disposition, deeds and discourse.
  2. Lying, anger and grudges give opportunity to the devil.
B.  Quenching The Spirit.
  1. I Thessalonians 5:19 informs the Christian that the opposite of Quenching the Spirit is to rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and to give thanks to God.
  2. The Spirit will teach us all things if we will surrender.
C.  Insulting The Spirit.
  1. When a believer willfully persists in sin the Holy Spirit is outraged (Hebrews l0:26-29).
  2. The Spirit is honored when a Christian follows the Word of God.
D.  Lying To The Spirit.
  1. In Acts 5:1-11, Ananias and Sapphira lied to the Spirit by pretending to give all while holding back a portion of their property.
  2. They sinned against the Spirit who is the source of unity in the Christian community.
E.  Blasphemy Against The Spirit.
  1. Jesus made it very plain that "Speaking against the Son is forgivable while speaking against the Spirit is not" (Matthew 12:31-32).
  2. The Holy Spirit is to be blessed and honored.

Keeping The Fire Burning

Text:  Luke 12:32-40, Matthew 24:43-44

Preface:   The text we read is the Nineteenth Parable of our Lord and Savior.  Christ is trying to teach us the lesson that we need to be ready and watching for the "Great Catching Away" of the Saints (I Thessalonians 4).  In this parable, Christ is referring to the "Good man of the House", in teaching us to keep our Spiritual house in order.

A.  The Believer Has Been Promised:
  1. The Kingdom of His father (Luke 12:32).
  2. It is the Will of God that we inherit His Kingdom, we are joint heirs with Christ.
B.  He Should Therefore:
  1. Store up treasures in Heaven (Luke 12:33).
  2. Keep his clothing adjusted (Luke 12:35).
  3. Lamps burning (Luke 12:35).
C.  He Will Then:
  1. Be constantly ready, for the Bridegroom will come at the least expected hour (Matthew 24:36).
  2. Be served personally by the Bridegroom.

Quick-Fix Religion

Text:  Genesis 1:45

Preface:   As a teenager, Joseph had a Divine dream.  God revealed to him that he would one day be the leader of Egypt.  Even his older brothers would be submissive to him.  However, years of preparation were required to get him ready.  Early years of pride and immaturity had to be chiseled away as he became a man worthy to live out the Will of God for his life.  Joseph progressed from the pit to the prison to the palace.  Every step for Joseph was a growth process.  He was thirty years old when he became Pharaoh's assistant.  At least twenty-tine years passed between the pit and the palace.  He was prepared in a "crock pot" (slow) not a "microwave".  It was a marathon not a sprint.

A.  Joseph Needed Time To.
  1. Mature.
  2. Be tested and broken.
  3. Understand that he could "Over estimate the event and under estimate the process".
  4. Be patient and listen to Jehovah.
B.  Too Often We:
  1. Don't want miracles from God, we want magic.
  2. People today are looking for a "Quick Fix" and not a "Move of God" (James 5:7-11).
  3. Will not wait for the "Plan of God" in our life (Psalm 37).
C.  Joseph Matured.
  1. Joseph operated out of years of wisdom and experience.
  2. Was intimate with God and possessed a Divine Perspective on life.
  3. Instead of revenge, Joseph chose to forgive his family and meet their need for food.

Emmanuel

Text:  Matthew 1:23

Preface:   God originally wanted a close relationship with His creation.  He started out in the beginning by giving man everything, because He wanted man to possess all of creation (Genesis 1:29-30,2:22).  However, satan sabotaged God's relationship with man.  As a result, man now hides and avoids God.  Man does not desire a relationship with God, even though God still pursues and desires a relationship with man.  Today we are better off because of God's only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.  Let us look at two points that should touch every heart, especially at Christmas.

A.  The Reality - God is With Us.
  1. Isaiah 9:6 tells us that a child would be born and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God.
  2. The incarnation (Luke 2:7).
    1. Emmanuel-God with us.
  3. Divinity and humanity coming together in unity.
  4. God is now more than with us, He is now one of us.
  5. John 1:14. "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us."
B.  The Result
  1. He cares for His people.
  2. He sustains His people.
  3. He comforts His people.
  4. He has prepared a better home for His children.
Thought:  "And thou shalt call His name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is God with us."  That's what makes the difference in this life.  Have you ever wondered what kind of world ours would be if Christ had never deliberately come to earth to be one of us?

True Encouragement

Text:  Haggai 2:1-9

Preface:   Discouragement robs life of its vitality and zeal and if left unchecked can be fatal!  Abraham Lincoln once said:  "I am now the most miserable man living.  Whether I shall ever be better, I cannot tell.  I awfully anticipate I shall not".  None of us is immune to discouragement!  Fortunately, God's Word provides insight!

A.  God's Presence (Haggai 2:4).
  1. "I am with you!"  What more could any man need?
  2. Discouragement causes us to tune out or not hear the voice of God.
  3. Discouragement causes us to slack off or totally stop the work of God.
  4. Discouragement will keep us from an intimate relationship with God.
B.  God's Promises (Haggai 2:5).
  1. God is not a liar (Numbers 23:19).
  2. What He said in the past is still true today.
  3. Man's words are never binding, but God will reassure us daily if we will listen.
C.  God's Perspective (Haggai 2:6-9).
  1. Haggai informed them that they were caught up in their present view of the Temple.
  2. God gives us the future perspective.
  3. What we need when we are discouraged is a different view- God's view.
  4. It is the perspective that Paul said, "Passes all understanding" (Philippians 4:7).

Taking A Stand

Text:  John 7:50-52

Preface:   Standing alone can be the most courageous yet stressful time in a Christian's life.  Anyone can follow the crowd, but it takes a true warrior to take a stand and live by it.  Many Christians today find it easier to just follow others even if they are wrong.  We read in John chapter seven, that a man named Nicodemus did not like following others when it involved following Christ.

A.  Nicodemus Stood Alone (John 7:50-51).
  1. As he came to Jesus by night in John chapter three.
  2. As he asked the Pharisees to hear him (John 7:51).
  3. Nicodemus stood with a few at the Burial (John 19:39).
B.  Others Who Stood Alone.
  1. The Tenth Leper stood alone (Luke 17:17).
  2. Noah stood alone (2 Peter 2:5).
  3. Daniel stood alone and faced the lion's den (Daniel 6:10).
  4. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stood alone (Daniel 3:17).
  5. Esther stood alone (Esther 4:16).
C.  Jesus Stood Alone.
  1. To bring salvation to us (John 7:37-38).
  2. In the temptation in the wilderness (Matthew 4).
