My Purpose As A Christian
Text: Colossians 1:24-2:5
Preface: What Has God Designed Me To Do?
Many people today are puzzled about their sense of purpose in life. Jesus must be supreme in our lives. Today as we read our text, we discover exactly what is our purpose for living. This passage gives us six strategic statements that will help us understand what we've been designed to do.
1. We Must Suffer Joyfully.
- Verse 24 makes it clear that Paul saw suffering as part of the job description of a Christ follower.
- Most of us try to get rid of suffering. II Corinthians 7:4, Paul says that he found joy in suffering for Christ sake.
- The word "affliction" is never used of the suffering of Jesus on the cross, but instead refers to the "pressures" of life that Paul endured.
2. To Serve According To Our Call.
- Since Christ was supreme in his life, Paul chose to follow Him fully.
- Serving God is not always easy, a true servant knows that they are stewards of Jesus Christ.
- It is not OUR mission we are on, but HIS mission.
3. Move Others Toward Maturity.
- Verse 28 tells us to "Proclaim Him".
- Jesus left us the responsibility in Matthew 28:20 to teach others to obey what He commanded.
- We cannot be PASSIVE or LAZY if we are SERIOUS about bringing others to maturity.
4. To Work Wholeheartedly.
- We are worn out because we are using OUR energy.
- We need to be using HIS energy (vr. 29 and chapter 2 verse 1).
- Paul surrendered his availability to God’s ability.
5. To Enrich The Lives Of Others.
- Verse 2 and 3 tells us to "encourage and unite in love".
- I Thessalonians 5:11, Paul informs us to "encourage one another and build each other up," NOT DOWN.
- Speak GOOD things or DON'T speak at all.
6. To Delight In Obedience.
- One germ can infect the whole body, and one negative witness can infect the body of Christ.
- Disobedience is a direct sign of one falling away from God.
- Nehemiah makes it very clear that "all members need to pull together".
This Sunday, how is your inventory concerning these six areas?
It’s much better to understand your purpose for being here than to walk in circles your entire life.

But God Is With Us
Text: Acts 7:9
Preface: I believe that the conjunctive "but" is the most outstanding word when it comes to dealing with satan. Why should we feel discouraged when our God is always with us? Just as God was with Joseph, He will pull us out of our pit and set our feet on solid ground.
A. The Pit Of Helplessness.
- How many times this week have you felt helpless concerning something you are facing in life?
- Moses, no doubt, felt helpless when he got to the Red Sea and Pharaoh was starring at him. (Exodus 14:10)
- Daniel felt helpless when cast into the den full of lions. (Daniel 6:16)
B. A Pit Of Uselessness.
- How many times this week have some of you here tonight felt useless?
- Don't you imagine that Aaron felt useless after God ordered the golden calf to be burned and then digested? (Exodus 32)
- Judas felt useless after betraying Jesus. (Matthew 26:47)
C. The Pit Of Worthlessness.
- How many times this week have some felt like you are worthless?
- How worthless did Joseph feel after being sold by his own brothers? (Genesis 37:20)
- How worthless did Peter feel after betraying Christ three times? (Luke 22:31)
D. But God!
- The Bible tells us "But God" was on the scene.
- Not having FAITH in God, denies His power (Matthew 17:20)
- The 11th chapter of Hebrews reassures the Child of God that He will step in on all our troubles.
- However, we must hold to that unchanging hand. (Hebrews 13:8)
- God is not a respecter of persons (Acts 10:34)

3-S Tonic Of The Church
Text: I Thessalonians 5:19
Preface: Years ago people used to tell you of a certain miracle tonic called 3-S Tonic. It was supposed to have ingredients that would give stability and help you to get things going in your life. Apostle Paul tells the Thessalonians that they need to be "Spirit Keepers" concerning the Holy Ghost in the church.
In thinking about this little tonic of years ago, I thought of what it would be like if we, as Christians, would apply the following 3-S outline to our lives.
A. Serious Saints Desire Spiritual Power.
- We need to have God at work with us - not against us.
- We need Spiritual power in order to;
- Love the unlovable.
- Pardon the unpardonable.
- Minister to the miserable.
- Endure the pain and hardship of everyday life.
B. Stop Putting Out The Flame.
- Some fires in the church need extinguished.
- We must stop putting out the FLAME OF THE HOLY GHOST.
- We must stop putting out the FLAME OF SPIRITUAL RENEWAL.
- We need to be FANNING THE FLAME OF THE HOLY GHOST.
C. Signs Of Spirit Quenching.
- Becoming carnal minded.
- The church and laity are lifeless and careless.
- Powerless and having a form of the Spirit.
- Meaningless, not wanting to grow or let others grow. Not wanting renewal.
- Fruitless, not bearing or wanting others to bear Spiritual fruit.
Thought: Misery loves company and Paul is instructing us in the Word that we are to "Fan the Flame" of the Holy Spirit.
Today, let us begin to practice this lesson and just see if God will bless us abundantly. What a tonic!

Thieves And Robbers
Text: Luke 18:35
Preface: Do you ever feel like you have been robbed? Ever get angry because you allowed someone to steal something from you? The Christian can be very open to having a blessing taken from us. The Word of God gives us warnings concerning this issue. If you are like me, you don't have any blessings to loose to anyone.
A. Warning To Believers
- We are not to lay up treasures on earth. (Matthew 6:19)
- There are NO thieves and robbers in Heaven. (Matthew 6:20)
- Where is your heart? (Matthew 6:21)
B. They Will Not Hinder Me
- People sometimes try to hinder our blessings. (I Corinthians 16:9)
- Paul stated that "many tried to oppose him."
- The crowd tried to hinder blind Bartimaeus from being healed. (Luke 18:35)
- Satan robbed Adam and Eve from their Garden of Eden. (Genesis 3)
C. Jesus Is Always Willing
- To feed five-thousand. (Matthew 14:17)
- To heal Jairus’ daughter, or our needs. (Luke 8:41)
- To heal the woman with an issue of blood, or our sickness. (Luke 8:45)
- To do what we ask in JESUS NAME. (John 14:13)

A Confused Rose
Text: Acts 12:5-8
Preface: Get Ready to Praise God
In the twelfth chapter of Acts, we find where Herod is busy vexing the church. He killed James, the brother of John, and now Peter had been arrested for the fourth time. History tells us that satan has tried to stop or hinder the church and the spread of the gospel.
However, the plot to kill Peter did not work, and a blessing was to follow. Remember, satan may give you a temporary set-back, but God is eternal. Oh what an impact this story can have on our Spiritual lives if we will adhere to its teaching.
A. After Easter
Peter was to be put to death after the Passover was observed. Four guards were ordered to secure and chain Peter while in prison. He was to be chained to two guards while the other two guarded.
B. But Prayer Went Out
Prayer meeting’s were called for the protective care of Peter. (vr.-5) If we are sincere about our miracle, we will dedicate ourselves to prayer. (Romans 12:12)
C. Miraculous Deliverance
The Angel of the Lord appeared and instructed Peter to: (vr.-8-9);
- Arise up
- Grid thyself
- Bind on thy sandals
- Cast on thy garment
- Follow me
Peter followed and experienced the first automatic door opener ever used. (vr.-10) The angel departed Peter after he was free from prison. (vr.-10)
D. Peter Was Late For Prayer
Peter knocked at the gate of Mary’s home. (vr.-13) Rhoda (Greek is Rose), answered and informed the saints at prayer meeting. They thought Rose was mad and insisted it was an angel. (vr.-15)
They prayed, but did not have faith. Impossible to please God without faith. (Hebrews 11:6)

The Wrong Sword
Text: I Samuel 21:9-15
Preface: Remember: God Really Loves You
One of the greatest stories recorded in the Old Testament is the one of King David running to the King of Achish for protection. When we become complacent over troubles and trials in life, it is often easy to turn the wrong direction. Take a look this morning at just what went wrong with David.
A. King Or Not King?
- How would you feel if you were anointed to be king, but was not even allowed to enter the palace? (I Samuel 16:13)
- Saul was out to destroy David just as satan is out to destroy us. (Eph. 2:2)
- Remember, sometimes things are not as they appear to be.
B. David Ran To A Friend
- David ran to King Achish, carrying the Sword of Goliath, whom he had slain. (I Samuel 21:9)
- Goliath was no friend to King Achish and David felt very safe in his company.
- However, the servants became very jealous of David and changed the king’s feelings.
C. I'm Afraid, Big Sword Or Not
- David was probably more afraid than ever before in his life. (vr.-12)
- He felt that his only defense was to play as a foolish, insane individual. (vr. 13)
- King Achish and his servants were not at all impressed with the huge sword of Goliath, even though David had helped them.
Thought: The only real sword is the "Sword of Truth" which is the Word of God. We must learn to turn to God with all our trials and not unto man.

My Burden Bearer
Text: Matthew 11:28
Preface: Why Are You Here Tonight?
How many of us tonight will admit that we are "HEAVY BURDENED". How many tonight will admit that I seem to suffer from the "I JUSY WANT TO GIVE UP" syndrome? How many tonight admit; "THAT AT TIMES MY FAITH IS WEAK"?
A. The Problem - Labored and Heavy Laden
- Some are burdened with extreme stress, grief, emotional, financial, loneliness.
- Jesus understands (Isaiah 53:3)
- Some are oppressed with sin, they suffer no greater burden.
- However, to all these problems Jesus addresses Himself. (Matt. 11:28)
B. The Promise - "I Will Give You Rest"
- Jesus offers rest for BODY and SOUL.
- Jesus offers pardon for the sinful. (John 3:16)
- He gives rest for the CONSCIENCE and the HEART.
- After all, JOY IN OUR SALVATION,
- He offers REST IN HEAVEN. (Rev. 21:1-5)
C. The Proposition - "Come Unto Me"
- We can go many places and not find rest.
- Jesus is the rock.
- However, this requires some action on our part;
- The prodigal son acted (Luke 15)
- The demoniac came to Christ. (Mark 5:6)
D. The People - "All Ye"
- God’s love is EXTENDED to ALL.
- No matter how sinful we have been.
- No one must cross Jordan alone.
- God’s grace is offered to all.
- God’s eternal plan for retirement is offered to all.
- Cast your care upon the one that is able.

A TREAT EVERYTIME
Text: Psalms 28:6-9
Preface: Happy Halleluiah Day
Almost all of us remember when we would dress up and knock on our neighbors door. We were expecting a good treat from the person whom we had greeted. However, at times, we were let down. Oh how great to know that Christ still knocks at our hearts door and we receive every time.
Today, we know that we discourage going from door to door and asking for treats. But there are plenty of treats available to God’s children if we will be obedient and ask in the Name of Jesus. (Matthew 21:22) I believe we receive a TREAT every time.
A. Seven Treats From The Father.
- He hears our prayers (vr.-6)
- He is our strength (vr.-7,8)
- He is our shield (vr.-7)
- He is our help (vr.-7)
- He is our salvation (vr.-9)
- He is a blessing (vr.-9)
- He is my food and support (vr.-9)
B. Three Treats To Our Father
- When we bless our Father (vr.-6)
- To see our heart rejoice (vr.-7)
- To sing a song of praise to Him (vr.-7)
