Forty-One Names In The Life Of Christ
Text: Matthew 1:1
Preface: When we think of the Birth of Jesus during our Christmas season, we do not think of the genealogy of the Baby Jesus. In the Book of Matthew the genealogy of Christ is traced to forty-one ancestors. When we examine the family tree we find some names that we normally associate with the Savior of the World, and some that you would never place in line with such a baby chose to represent Jehovah God on this earth.
A. He Traces The Line From Abraham To Joseph.
- Abraham being the Father of Hebrew race (Galatians 3:16).
- Also from David through his son Solomon (II Samuel 12:24).
- He gives the line of Joseph.
B. The Genealogy Is Remarkable For Several Reasons.
- Contains the names of four women.
a. Oriental and Mid-Eastern genealogies rarely do this.
- All four women had questionable backgrounds.
a. Tamar was an ex-harlot (Matthew 1:3, Genesis 38:13-30).
b. Rahab was an ex-harlot (Matthew 1:5, Joshua 2:1).
c. Ruth was a former pagan (Matthew 1:5, Ruth 1:4).
d. Bath-sheba was a former adulteress (Matthew 1:6, II Samuel 11:1-5).
- But by the wonderful Grace of God, Tamar became the grandmother of King David.
- Rahab became his great, great grandmother.
- Ruth became his great grandmother.
- Bath-sheba became his wife and mother of Solomon.
Comments: Who would ever have thought that God would choose such people to be a part of the ancestry of the Baby Jesus. Just as the people we have talked about today have played an important role in history of the Kingdom of Christ, we also can do our part regardless of our past.

The Three Annunciations
Text: Matthew 1:18
Preface: The Archangel Gabriel was to appear to three people and announce the Birth of Christ. This is the eighth of nine Biblical births in which God Himself intervened. The first being Isaac to Abraham and Sarah (Genesis 21:1). The ninth was Jesus to Mary (Luke 2:7). See if you can come up with the other seven.
A. The First Annunciation Was To Zacharias. (Luke 1:5-25)
- Gabriel means 'Hero of God".
- To announce the birth of John (Forerunner to Messiah).
- Zacharias was in process of burning incense at the Golden Altar.
- This was the first spoken message from Heaven in 400 years.
- Zacharias is informed that their prayers have been heard.
- He would be named John, abstain from strong drink, be great in the sight of God, would be filled with the Holy Spirit from mother's womb.
- Would preach the Word of God and prepare the Way of the Messiah and fulfill the Word of God (Isaiah 40:3).
B. The Second Annunciation Was To Mary. (Luke 1:26-38)
- Gabriel told Mary that God had chosen her to bear His blessed Son into the world.
- He told her that she was highly favored and blessed among women.
- The Archangel predicted that the babe would
a. Be called Jesus, Son of God.
b. Would be called the Son of the Highest. Later a demon would refer to him by this very name. (Mark 5:7).
- Would inherit the Throne of David, and occupy the throne forever.
- Mary is perplexed and asks, 'How shall this be".
- Gabriel responded by telling her that the Holy Ghost shall come upon thee. (Luke 1:34).
- The supernatural element in the incarnation was not the Birth of Christ, but rather His conception. He was born of a woman as all humans are.
C. The Third Annunciation Was To Joseph. (Matthew 1:18-25).
- Concerning her pregnancy, was minded to put her away privily (Matthew 1:19).
- Was assured in a dream that the birth was impending and was indeed of God.
- Joseph was told that the babe "Would save His people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21, also Acts 4:12, 5:31, 13:23,38, Hebrews 7:25).
- Gabriel referred to the babe as "Emmanuel, meaning God with us".
- Joseph arranges to make Mary his wife.

The Elect Lady
Text: Acts 1:11
Preface: As we look at the beautiful words recorded in the book of II John we see the Apostle talking to a lady. Unlike all of the other books of the Bible, this one is addressed to a woman. It holds the same place in John's writings that Philemon holds in Paul's epistles. It is the shortest book in the entire Bible. John does not mention her name or his own name in the book. This could have been done in fear of persecution from the Roman authorities, who viewed Christianity as an unlawful religion.
A. This Lady Is Commended By The Apostle. (II John 1:1-4)
- Commended that her children walk in truth.
- Some commentators feel that this is referring to the church and the children are laity.
B. This Lady Is Commanded By The Apostle. (II John 1:5-6)
- That she Walk in Love
- That she Walk in Truth.
- To practice truth without love leads to legalism.
- To employ love without truth leads to liberalism.
- Ephesians 4:15 tells us to speak the truth in love.
C. This Lady Is Cautioned By The Apostle. (II John 1:7-13)
- Look out for Satan.
- To look out for herself (II John 1:8)
- John wanted this lady to receive a full reward at the Judgment Seat of Christ as the Apostle Paul instructed the Church at Corinth in I Corinthians 3:5-17.

The Three Songs of Praise
Text: Matthew 1:23
Preface: When we are encouraged to join in Praise and Worship during a service, it probably never enters our mind that before the birth of Christ, three people also praised God for blessings in their lives. During the Christmas Season, let us voluntarily praise God and continue to do so the entire year thereafter.
A. The Praise Of Elisabeth To Mary (Luke 1:39-45).
- This apparently happened prior to Joseph's learning of Mary's condition.
- After the Archangel left Mary, she rushed to Elisabeth to share the news.
- Elisabeth's baby (John) leaped within her and she was filled with the Holy Spirit.
- Elisabeth then blesses Mary and the "Fruit of her womb" (Luke 1:42).
B. The Praise Of Mary To God (Luke 1:46-56).
- Mary responds, 'My soul doth magnify the Lord and my spirit had rejoiced in God my Savior" (Luke 1:46-47).
- She must realize that history will record her favor of the Lord.
- She praises the Lord for putting down the mighty, exalting the meek, filling the hungry, and displaying the strength of His mighty arm (Isaiah 52:10).
- After three months Mary returns to Nazareth.
C. The Praise Of Zacharias To God (Luke 1:57-59).
- Zacharias' son is born and is dedicated to God.
- His friends assume the baby will be named after him. The old priest, however, still mute, writes out that his name will be John.
- He immediately regains his speech and praises God in the Power of the Holy Spirit, thanking Him for:
a. Keeping His promises made to Abraham and David.
b. Visiting and redeeming His people (Luke 7:16, Psalms 111:9).

Four Great Days In Human History
Text: Luke 2:7
Preface: Joseph brought Mary to Bethlehem because of an enrollment decree which commanded each Hebrew citizen to be counted from that town where he or she was born. This was the third all-important trip made to Bethlehem. Ruth and Naomi made the first journey (Ruth 1:22). Samuel the prophet made the second (I Samuel 16).
A. The Fourth Greatest Day In Human History.
- Was the Birth of Jesus (Luke 2:7).
- Many have ask the question concerning why did Joseph and Mary not stay with relatives in Bethlehem?
- Why was Jesus born in a place that housed animals?
B. The Third Greatest Day In Human History.
- Occurred some thirty-three years later.
- Then the babe grew into glorious manhood, only to be put to death between two thieves on Calvary's Cross (Luke 23:33).
- Without the shedding of blood there can be no remission of sin.
- Born in a manger with a purpose to give His Life for all that want Life eternal (John 3:3-16).
C. The Second Greatest Day.
- Three days after the crucifixion of Christ (Matthew 28:5-6).
- An angel told sorrowing women that He Is Not Here.
- Without His Resurrection there would be No Resurrection for us.
D. The Greatest Day In Human History.
- Is yet to happen.
- Revelation 11:15 tells us that the seventh Angel sounded; and there were great voices in Heaven, saying, the kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever.
- You see, the greatest day in our history will be when all the plan that God gloriously worked is fulfilled and we dwell with Christ in Heaven.

Nevertheless
Text: Luke 5:1-6
Preface: As we look at the close of another year, often our thoughts ponder on the problems that seem to still hang on. We should start the New Year with a positive attitude and trust God to guide us in the coming year. However, we must put Feet under our Prayers and believe by Faith that the answer is on the way. The Word of God gives us clear scripture as a roadmap to use for direction.
A. Fishing All Night (Luke 5:1-6).
- Disciples had toiled all night and proceeded to clean the nets.
- Fishermen were gone out of the ships.
- Nevertheless Simon did as Christ ask.
- The net brake from the abundance of fish.
B. The Widow's Oil (II Kings 4).
- The widow had nothing and her son's were being taken into slavery.
- Elisha asks, "What have you in the house"?
- She was told to borrow vessels that a blessing from God was near.
C. Blind Made To See (John 9:1-7).
- Jesus passed by and saw.
- Disciples questioned about sin and who was responsible for blindness.
- Jesus spit upon ground and placed the spittle in his eyes.
- The blind man washed in the pool of Siloam and was made to see.
Comments: Look back at the Old Year and inventory the excess baggage of troubles and trails. Look forward to the New Year with Faith believing that God will set you free. Remember that Nevertheless, we are to take God's Word and move with it.

The Sin Of Presumption
Text: Numbers 14:39-45
Preface: Some have said, "Wise men presume nothing but hope for the best". In this Scripture we have a solemn example of the foolhardiness of attempting to do work for Christ without His presence being with us.
A. Who They Happened To Be.
- Former slaves from Egypt who had been rescued by the Hand of God.
- They had followed a Divine pillar, who had witnessed the Lord's wonder work.
- Murmurers who had refused to accept the report of the 2 faithful spies and who desired to make themselves a captain and return to Egypt.
B. What Happened To Them.
- When they heard that God had sentenced them to 40 years of wandering in the wilderness because of their unbelief, they said, "Lo, we be here, and will go up" (Numbers 14:40).
- By doing this they went against the Word of God, they were using their own vain strength, vain effort.
- They presumed on the past mercies of God.
- Murmuring is sure to lead to failure.
C. What They Experienced.
- The Amalekites came down and smote them (Numbers 14:45).
- Their self-confident effort gained them only disappointment.
- Without the armor of God we cannot withstand the devil (Ephesians 6:10-18).

Satan Demands Your Surrender
Text: Isaiah 36:8
Preface: The ancient city of Jerusalem was besieged by a man named Sennacherib, leader of the Assyrian army. Being surrounded by an enemy was nothing new for Jerusalem. It always has been the world's most coveted city, the most invaded city, and the most devastated city. The Assyrians sent one of its generals, Rabshakeh, to Jerusalem to demand the surrender the city.
A. The Meeting Of Surrender.
- General Rabshakeh met with the leaders of Judah at Jerusalem.
- His speech was a combination of blasphemy and boasting.
- He claimed that Sennacherib's invasion of Judah was of divine authority.
B. The Host Of Assyria Had Never Seemed So Invincible.
- Rabshakeh told the Jews that their situation was hopeless.
- He wanted them to believe that Jerusalem was just like all the other cities that had believed on some strange god to deliver them.
C. How Could They Think Of Resisting.
- Scoffing at the military weakness of the Jews, he told them that they could not stand even a small detachment of the Assyrian Army.
- He taunted them by offering them 2000 horses to them if they could find riders (Isaiah 36:8).
D. Single Soldier Combat.
- God stretched forth His hand and smote the camp of the Assyrians.
- Not by an invading army, chemical warfare or any other manmade means.
- A single angel destroyed 185,000 soldiers that were encamped outside the walls of Jerusalem.
Comments: God will never let His people be without help. When satan seems to have gained the upper hand, the power of the Holy Spirit will summon whatever it takes to deliver us from the hand of evil.

Simeon, Ever Persistent
Text: Luke 2:25
Preface: If you have studied the scriptures very long, one will come upon people who are mentioned only briefly. However, their appearance in the Holy Word is so meaningful that they impact our lives forever. The widow who fed Elijah, Nathan and his message to David, the woman who touched the hem of Jesus garment are just a few that are embedded in our memories. As we think of the birth and infancy of Christ we need to remember a man of God called Simeon.
A. A Faithful Remnant In Israel Looked For The Messiah.
- Luke 1 and 2 tells of Zacharias and Elizabeth, Mary and Joseph, the shepherds, and Simeon and a lady named Anna who faithfully looked for the Messiah.
- Faithful people also look for His Second Coming. "Unto them that look for Him shall He appear" (Hebrews 9:28).
B. Christ Came To An Oppressed People.
- Israel was under bondage to Rome.
- The people were under bondage to religious legalism and traditions.
- The human race was under bondage to sin.
C. Simeon, The Listening Prophet.
- The name Simeon means "hearing".
- Simeon was blessed with Spiritual Graces.
a. Just and devout (Luke 2:25).
b. Holy Ghost anointed (Luke 2:25).
c. Promised that he would see Messiah before death (Luke 2:26)
d. Patient (Luke 2:25).
D. Simeon's Mission Was Fulfilled.
- Was led by the Spirit into the temple on the day of Christ's circumcision (Luke 2:27).
- Gave praise to God for sending Christ.
- Declared Christ to be the Savior (Luke 2:30).
- Prophesied salvation to the Gentiles (Luke 2:32).
- Foretold of Mary's sorrow at His death (Luke 2:34-35).

I Believe In Angels
Text: Psalms 34:7
Preface: Some people do not believe in angels, but I do. I believe in angels because the Bible tells me about them: about their nature, their ministry, their creation and their constantly giving of praise around the Throne of God. I do not, however, believe angels should be worshiped. Angels do not desire our worship. They desire to give glory and honor to God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. In the Fourth Century A.D., the Christian Church formally condemned the worship of angels.
A. What Angels Really Are.
- Angels are not God.
- Paul speaking to the Colossians tells us that Christ is the head of all (Colossians 1:15-16).
- Angels are Spiritual beings, can appear in physical form.
- Ezekiel, Jeremiah, John on the Island of Patmos beheld angels around the Throne of God.
- Cherubim's gaze upon the Mercy Seat (Exodus 25:18).
- Gabriel and Michael are called Archangels.
- First responsibility of angels is to Glorify God.
- Second is to care for the Heirs of Salvation (Mathew 4:11).
B. Angels Played A Major Role In Establishing The New Testament Church.
- Acts 5:19 tells of the Angel of the Lord opening the prison doors.
- Acts 27:22-23, tells of an angel appearing to Paul on board ship.
- Angels ministered to John on Patmos (Revelations 3:5, 5:2, 5:11, 7:1).
C. I Believe Angels Minister To Heirs Of Salvation Today.
- We can at anytime entertain messengers unaware (Hebrews 13:2).
- Angels will minister to us at the Rapture (I Thessalonians 4:16).
- Don't forget God's promise (Psalms 34:7).

Ten Lepers Cleansed
Text: Luke 17:11-19
Preface: Wherever Jesus went He always found occasion for the exercise of His infinite compassion and power. He was always on the look out for the distressed and the despairing. His Miracle of Healing in this nameless village while on the way to Jerusalem has for us heart-searching thoughts.
A. Pitiful Sight.
- Ten men bound together by a common misery, and utterly unable to save themselves.
- Like sin, leprosy brings uncleanness.
- Like sin, it leads to separation, (Luke 17:12)
- Like sin, it is humanly incurable.
B. Earnest Prayer.
- Verse 13 tells us they Prayed "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us".
- Even though this was no doubt a hoarse cry through the lips of a leper, it was music to the ear of Jesus.
- It came from the heart.
C. Simple Remedy.
- "Go, show yourselves to the priest" (Luke 17:14).
- Two things were absolutely needed:
a. Faith in the Word of Christ (Luke 17:19).
b. Obedience to the Will of Christ.
- If they had waited till they felt better, they would have never gone.
- It is while we believe and obey that we receive from Christ.
D. Grateful Recipient.
- Verse 15 tells that, "And one, when he saw that he was healed turned and looked back and glorified God".
- It is only when we are set free from sin can we give glory to God.
- Humility and Thankfulness are characteristic of those saved by the grace of God.
