Oh My, I'm Alone With God

Text:  Exodus 3:1-7

Preface:   Ever wonder why Moses did not grow angry and resentful toward God because of all the sacrifices he had to give up?  How about the question of what made him willing to return to Egypt as God’s humble servant?  Let us take a closer look at this great man of God.

A.  Moses Had To Get Alone With God
  1. Had Moses stayed in Egypt, he probably would not have listened to God.
  2. Moses exile in Midian gave him 40 years of reflection time.
  3. How long has it been since God was able to get us alone with Him?
  4. When you have turned every direction known, stand still and see God move.
B.  Moses Had To Be Honest With God
  1. By the time Moses met God at the burning bush, he had forgotten and lost his former attitude and bad characteristics
  2. He now recognized his weakness
  3. When God told Moses that he would bring the people out of Egypt, Moses replied, "Who am I."
C.  Moses Had To Get Hungry For God.
  1. What does it take to get some of us really hungry for God?
  2. Could it be that we also are about to walk past the burning bush that God has for us.
  3. Spiritual hunger will touch the Spirit of God.
  4. Moses had to deal with fear before he could become a leader for God.

Peddlers Of False Religion

Text:  John 2:13-22

Preface:   The Bible records Christ’s visit to the Temple when He was twelve  (Luke 2:41).  Also recorded is the visit when He was 30 years old.  Joseph must have died since he is not mentioned in the last visit.

During New Testament times, the Passover sacrifice was ritually slaughtered in the Temple.  Jesus did not repudiate this Jewish tradition which was to be replaced with His death and resurrection  (I Corinthians 5:7).

A.  Christ’s Anger At Man
  1. No one could enter the Temple without witnessing the noisy, bargaining merchants and their animals.
  2. Jesus knew that the worshippers ought to have brought their own sacrifices with them.
B.  Easy Religion
  1. Outside the Temple, the currency was Roman coins.  Since these coins had on them the effigy of the Roman emperor, they could not be used to buy in the Temple.
  2. This made it easy for the money changers to take advantage of the Worshippers in order for them to buy the much needed sacrifice.
  3. Are we today looking for the easy way out in our worship of God?
  4. Christ did not and does not today approve of such desecration resulting from convenience of easy religion.
  5. It disturbs Christ when we make His house something other than a House of Prayer.

You Might Be A Water Walker If...

Text:  Matthew 14:22-33

Preface:   Our Text informs us that the Disciples were in the mist of a storm, just as some of us here today are.  A small fishing boat in a terrible storm is not too safe of a place to be.

Scared to death the Disciples see Christ, whom they did not even recognize at first, walking on the raging sea.  Jesus was coming to their aid and He is still coming to us in our time of trouble.

Not only did Jesus walk on water this evening, but Peter also became a WATER WALKER.  Oh what faith this man, Peter, had.  To step out of the boat and move toward his Lord and Savior.

Ever wonder what it takes to be a WATER WALKER?  Could you be one?  Let us take a look at some of the qualifications it takes;

A.  You Might Be A Water Walker If You
  1. Want to listen to the voice of God.  Want to keep your eyes centered on Jesus Christ.
  2. Don’t care if everyone else is afraid to get out of the boat, you will anyway!  Can’t stand sitting around doing nothing for Christ.
B.  Don’t Knock Peter
  1. Unless you are willing to get up and move at the command of Jesus.  Remember, no other disciple even tried to go to Jesus as Peter did.
  2. How many times are we busy knocking someone else that tried to do something for Christ, and we do nothing.
It is much better to fail than to do nothing.  Why not try keeping your eyes on Jesus and win someone to Him?
