WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Text:  PROVERBS 22:1

"A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches. Loving favor rather than silver and gold." NKJ

A.  In peculiar circumstance people are named
  • Abram and Sarai
  • Issac and Rebekah
  • Moses
  • Hannah
  • Zacharias and Elizabeth
B.  God named His Son
  • Who is the source of His name?
  • Announcement of His name.
C.  Status of His name
  • John 3:31 - "He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all."  NKJ
  • Colossians 1:16 - "For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on the earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him."  NKJ
  • Ephesians 1:21 - "far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come."  NKJ
  • Hebrews 1:4 - "having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they."  NKJ
D.  Supremacy of His name
  • Matthew 4:23 - "And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the Gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of diseases among the people."  NKJ
  • Revelation 4:1 - "After these things I looked and behold a door standing open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard like a trumpet speaking with me saying, ‘Come up here and I will show you things which must take place after this’."  NKJ
  • Revelation 4:10 - "the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying ."  NKJ
E.  All enemies of Jesus will bow to His supremacy
  • 1 Corinthians 15:24,25 - Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts and end to all rule and all authority and power.
For He must reign, til He has put all enemies under His feet. NKJ
  • Psalm 20:4-8 - May He grant you according to your heart’s desire. And fulfill all your purpose.
We will rejoice in your salvation.  And in the name of our God we will set up our banners!  May the Lord fulfill all your petitions.
Now I know that the Lord saves His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven.  With the saving strength of His right hand.
Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the Lord our God.
They have bowed down and fallen; but we have risen and stand upright.  NKJ
  • Acts 19:13-15 - Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying "We exercise you by the name of the Jesus who Paul preaches."
Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish high priest, who did so.
And the evil spirit answered and said, "Jesus I know and Paul I know, but who are you?"
  • Mark 16:17-20 - And these signs will follow those who believe; In My name they will cast our demons, they will speak with new tongues;
They will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick and they will recover.
So then after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God.
And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs.  Amen  NKJ
F.  We have Blessed Success in His name
  • John 14:12-14 - Most assuredly, I say unto you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.
And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son
If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.  NKJ

Embracing Our Call as Christians

Text:  Galatians 6:1-5
Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.
Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.
For if anyone thinks himself to be something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.
But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone and not in another.
For each one shall bear his own load.

A.  Burdens We Willingly Take Up
  • Galatians 6:1 - Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.
B.  Burdens We Faithfully Stay Under
  • Galatians 6:4,5 - But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone and not in another.
For each one shall bear his own load.
C.  Burdens We Gladly Give Up
  • Psalm 51:1-17
