Hoping For A Cloud On The Horizon

Text:  I Kings 18:16-46

Preface:   We live in the most amazing times of all history.  Except for the days Jesus Christ walked the earth, I wouldn't want to live during any better age than the present.  Furthermore, I am convinced that God is preparing to do a great work with His church.  I believe that there is a Holy Ghost rain cloud soon to come in our horizon.  We must prepare ourselves for revival.

A.  The Showdown On Mount Carmel.
  1. A single Prophet named Elijah, faithfully defeated hundreds of false prophets devoted to Baal.
  2. By faith, Elijah held to Jehovah's promises and would not be intimidated by satan.
  3. Elijah had the prophets of Baal executed.
B.  No Rain In Sight.
  1. After the destruction of the false prophets, Elijah and his servant ascended to Carmel's summit.
  2. Elijah "bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees"(I Kings 18:42).
  3. In this fetal position, the prophet pleaded for God to end His curse upon Israel.
  4. The rain had been shut-off for 3 1/2 years because of Israel's sin.
C.  Mercy Requires More.
  1. 3 1/2 years earlier, Elijah only Prayed one Prayer for the rain to stop.
  2. After Praying the first time, Elijah sent his servant to the edge of Carmel to look toward the sea for a cloud.
  3. The servant saw nothing, so Elijah once again Prayed.
  4. After five or six tries, most Christians would have given up.
  5. The seventh Prayer ended and the servant once again looked for a cloud.
  6. The servant returned and stated that he saw just a small cloud.
  7. With God, small things turn into miracles.
D.  One Cloud Was Enough.
  1. Elijah immediately ordered the servant to go tell Ahab that the land is about to flood.
  2. As the servant ran by faith on Elijah's word, the sky became black and the rain started falling.
  3. We as Christian's need to hold onto faith and trust God's promises. One cloud, even a tiny one, will do.

Tell Them About Jabez

Text:  I Chronicles 4:9-10

Preface:   In 1st. Chronicles, the book from which our text is taken, the first nine chapters record a genealogy beginning with Adam and continuing to the time of King David.  These genealogical listings are sometimes called the "begats".  Not particularly inspiring reading, they are usually skipped over by most readers.  Nestled in the midst of the genealogical records in 1 Chronicles is the prayer of a remarkable man called Jabez.  Only two verses record the story of Jabez and his prayer.  Preceding these two verses are "141 verses of "begats"; and 264 more verses follow.  But all at once God stops the writer and says, "Tell them about Jabez", a special man.  His attitude was different than that of the people of his day.  "Jabez was more honorable than his brothers," declares the Word of God.  Let us take a look at just what Jabez ask God to do for him.

A.  Oh, That You Would Bless Me Indeed.
  1. Jabez opened his prayer with a humble request, "Oh, that you bless me indeed!"
  2. This was not a selfish request for material gain, instead Jabez was asking for blessing that can only come through an intimate relationship with God.
  3. Matthew 5:6 tells us "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled".
B.  And Enlarge My Territory.
  1. Jabez ask God to broaden his borders of Faith and Spirituality.
  2. Personal revival always begins with dissatisfaction with the status quo and a desire to break out of the manmade boundaries that limit our Spiritual commitment.
C.  That Your Hand Would Be With Me.
  1. Jabez was depending upon God leading him and guiding him through life.
  2. Psalm 63:8; "You have hedged me behind and before, and laid your hand upon me."
  3. Psalm 23:4; "Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me."
D.  You Would keep Me From Evil.
  1. This remarkable man realized that he could not resist evil in his own power, but only through the power of God.
  2. I Peter 1:5 tells us that we are kept by the power of God by faith.
  3. Psalm 125:1; "Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever".

Comments:  Do our attitudes affect our prayers?  Jabez humbly ask God for 4 things, bless me; stretch me; guide me; keep me.  By God granting Jabez request we are assured that this same God will also grant our request if we follow the principles set forth in His Word.

Listening To The Wrong Voice

Text:  Numbers 22:18-21

Preface:   There are many voices that one may listen to today.  It should be very clear to each and every one today why many people are having trouble understanding the right way.  So many are caught up on ideology and do not know the truth about the Word of God or even the correct way to live a Christian life.  What a great lesson given to us in Numbers chapter 22.  If only we could make an effort to trust the lesson on obeying the Voice of God.  Take a look at just how God will get our attention.

A.  Balaam Had A Love For God.
  1. He did not seem to want to go against the Will of God.
  2. Had a personal relationship with God (Numbers 22:7).
  3. Would only respond to the others as God spoke to him (Numbers 22:8).
B.  Was Not Easy Persuaded.
  1. The evil one will continue to send people of persuasion.
  2. Balaam stated that he would not go against God's Will (Numbers 22:13).
  3. Satan would not give up on his mission.
  4. What would our soul winning be like if we used the same enthusiasm?
C.  God Will Get Our Attention.
  1. Balaam went on out of God's Will (Numbers 22:21).
  2. If Balaam would not listen, God would fill the brain and mouth of a donkey Numbers 22:23).
  3. The donkey saw the Angel of the Lord 3 times and Balaam did not (Numbers 22:23-27).
D.  Balaam's Eyes Opened.
  1. God allowed Balaam to see the Angel (Numbers 22:31).
  2. The Angel informed Balaam that if the donkey had not veered aside, he would have been killed (Numbers 22:33).
  3. Balaam was allowed to go to the princes, but only to speak the word's that God had impressed him to (Numbers 22:35).
Comments:  How many times in life has God warned us of being out of His Will?  Many times he will let us continue on our mission if we will only speak the words that He desires us to.  Would you not rather hear and obey God, than have Him speak to someone else, even a donkey?

Your Adversary

Text:  I Peter 5:8

Preface:   We fight not against flesh and blood, not with human beings, but against principalities, powers, and wicked spirits ruling and reigning in the hearts of ungodly men (Ephesians 6:12).  The devil is our adversary, and we are in warfare with the evil one.  We are in God's army, not the boy/girl scouts.  It is high time that we as Children of the Most High God realize that we need the Power of the Holy Spirit to combat satan.

A.  His Personality.
  1. He is called "that old serpent.... the devil, and satan" (Revelations 12:9)
  2. The personality of satan is not realized by the world.
  3. How real he was to the Lord Jesus Christ (Matthew 4:3).
B.  His Character.
  1. He is described by the unerring Word as "more subtle" (Genesis 3:1-7). As cunning as a serpent.
  2. It is part of his cunning to appear as "an angel of light (II Corinthians 11:14).
  3. Matthew 4:1 warns us that he is a tempter.
    a.  By the eye
    b.  He seeks to pamper our pride that we might forget or deny God.
C.  His Purpose.
  1. He steals (Luke 8:12).  He snatches away the Word from our hearts.
  2. He pollutes (Matthew 13:38).  His object is to spoil the good by overcrowding it with evil.
  3. He suggests (John 13:2).
  4. He provokes (I Chronicles 21:1-14).
  5. He sifts (Luke 22:31).
  6. He devours (I Peter 5:8) food for the devil.  What an awful thought.
D.  His Power.
  1. I Peter 5:8 tells us that he has great power and their is no doubt about that (Job 1).
  2. He is describe as a "roaring lion" (I Peter 5:8).
  3. He is called "the god of this world" (II Corinthians 4:4).
  4. He is described as having "power of death" (Hebrews 2:14), as the author of sin.
  5. He is able to fill the heart (Acts 5:3).  It must be a sorry house if the devil keeps the key.
Comments:  He is a defeated foe! There is coming a time when his defeat will become visibly known.  What a day that will be, with no more trials, temptations, or tribulations!

The Widow's Son

Text:  Luke 7:11-16

Preface:   It is a hope quickening thought that the Holy Spirit, that "Other Comforter", who is a gift of the risen Savior, possess the resurrecting power of Jesus Christ.  It is the Spirit that guickeneth.  The text we just read demonstrates His power to raise a soul dead in sin into a new life.  We all have seen a funeral and recognize that Jesus Christ alone can lift the load of an aching heart.  As D. L. Moody said, "Jesus spoiled every funeral that He went to."  The darkest night of gloom He can turn into midday brightness.

A.  An Afflicted Woman.
  1. Sorrowful past (widow).
  2. She carried the scene of her husband's funeral and the loneliness that followed everyday with her.
  3. At times we carry the quilt of past with us and it keeps the joy away.
B.  Bitter Present.
  1. Another season of trial has come; again the dark cloud of sorrow has rolled over this widow.
  2. When a dark moment in the past awakens again, it will greatly aggravate the misery of the present (Luke 7:12).
C.  Hopeless Future.
  1. At the funeral of her only son, the lone source of her comfort lay dead.
  2. When all hope seems to be gone, Jesus comes close to us.
  3. The Word tells us that the whole (well) need not a physician, but they that are sick (Matthew 9:12).
D.  An Almighty Friend.
  1. A friend in need is a friend in deed.
  2. The nearer she comes to the grave the nearer she comes to a life giving Savior.
  3. "When the Lord saw her He had compassion on her" (Luke 7:12).
  4. "Weep not, weep not" (Luke 7:12).
  5. Jesus touched the bier, and they that bare him stood still (Luke 7:14).
  6. "Young man I say unto thee, arise" (Luke 7:14).
  7. Christ is saying today to many, Arise.
  8. "He that was dead sat up" (Luke 7:15).

Parting Words From A Departing Son

Text:  John 19:26-27

Preface:   Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary, lived as a man for 33 years on this Earth.  I am sure His mother loved and cared for her son.  I am sure that His Earthly Father Joseph also loved and raised his son the best that he could possibly do.  Jesus' Heavenly Father loved His son so much that He gave His only Begotten Son for the sins of this world.  The Bible makes it very clear that we as Mothers must raise our children in the fear and admonition of all mighty God.

A.  Thanks To Mother.
  1. The verses in our text tell us that Christ was giving thanks to His mother (John 19:26).
  2. We should always give thanks to our mothers (Tell them and also show them).
B.  These Were Words Of Tribute To His Mother.
  1. The Bible tells us that:
    a.  A wise woman builds her house (Proverbs 14:1).
    b.  Establishes her home (Proverbs 24:3).
    c.  Fills her house with wealth (Proverbs 24:4).
C.  These Were Words Of Comfort To His Mother.
  1. The Bible tells us:
    a.  A virtuous woman has the full confidence of her husband (Proverbs 31:10-11).
    b.  Labors lovingly with her hands for her family (Proverbs 31:15,21).
Comments:  God loves mothers.  Husbands and children are also to love and respect mothers.  However, we as mothers should live a life fitting to be called a Virtuous Mother.  Let us strive as mothers to live according to God's Word.

We Can Be Lifted

Text:  Job 22:29

Preface:   Yes, thank God, although we may at times be cast down, and our characters almost dismantled by merciless hands, we can still hope in God.  For His hand is not shortened that it cannot save, we can confidently say, "There is a lifting up".

A.  The Need.
  1. In Luke 13 we read of a poor woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and in no wise could lift up herself.
  2. Some of us are in the same condition:
    a.  Bowed together by the love of the world.
    b.  Like the publican in the Word of God, we could not lift up so much as our eyes unto Heaven.
B.  The Lifter.
  1. "But thou, O Lord, art the lifter up of my head" (Psalms 3:3).
  2. When our head is bowed so deep in trouble and sorrow, the only power able or sufficient to lift us up is the Power of Almighty God.
  3. Psalms 27:6, tells us that Christ is not only the breaker up of the sin-closed way, but the Lifter of our spirit.
C.  The Provision.
  1. "I, if I be lifted up from the earth will draw all men unto Me" (John 12:32).
  2. Christ was Himself lifted up from the grave, lifted to His Throne on High.
  3. Christ took Peter's wife's mother, "by the hand and lifted her up" (Mark 1:31).
  4. Ezekiel 3:14, the prophet says, "So the Spirit lifted me up and took me away".
  5. "Lift up your heads, for your redemption draweth nigh" (Luke 21:28).
  6. "I will lift up my hands in Thy Name" (Psalms 63:4).
  7. "They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing, they shall cry aloud" (Isaiah 24:14).
Comments:  Do not let the devil keep you bowed down in sin, stress, sorrow or hurt.  Lift up your head and Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow.

Members Of his Body

Text:  Ephesians 5:30

Preface:   The Church, as His body, is all that is visible of Christ to the world.  In one Spirit are we all baptized into one body.  There are too many Christians today that do not realize the fact of being adopted into the Body of Christ.

A.  As Members We Enjoy One Gracious Privilege.
  1. John 15:5 makes it very understandable that we are part of His body (branches) and he is the vine.
  2. Without Him we can do nothing.
B.  As Members We have One Unquestionable Security.
  1. We are dead and forever hidden with Christ (Colossians 3:3).
  2. No one is able to separate us from Christ.
C.  As Members We Obey One Sovereign Will.
  1. We are told in Ephesians 5:23, that Christ is head of the Church.
  2. He is Savior of the Body.
D.  As Members We Are United In Working For One Great Purpose.
  1. According to II Corinthians 6:1, we are workers together with him.
  2. Not against him.
  3. That we receive not the Grace of God in vain.
E.  As Members We have A Special Care One For The Other.
  1. I John 3:16, states that as Christ laid down his life for us, we also should lay down our lives for our brethren.
  2. How many times in life have we missed the opportunity to minister to our brothers and sisters.
F.  As Members We Are Specially Cared For By The One To Whom We Belong.
  1. The Lord Jesus Christ loves the Church (body) And we are cared for by our heavenly Father (Ephesians 5:29).
Comments:  There should be no reason for the Children of God to suffer undue pain.  We have a heavenly Father who watches down on us as a mother hen watches over her flock.  Praise God from whom all blessings flow.

Saintset On Nebo

Text:  Deuteronomy 34:5-6

Preface:   We have in the text we just read, a picture of how good men die.  They are not dragged or driven, but consider it a call from God to go and meet Him.  Being prepared, we go forth willingly and with joy, not a leap in the dark.  We spring into life and light, holiness and Heaven.

A.  What Would The Closing Scene In The Life Of Moses Teach Him?
  1. That his life, though faulty, had not been a failure.
  2. God accepted it and committed Moses to rest.
  3. That though he had forfeited Divine pleasure, yet he had not lost Divine favor.
B.  What Does The Closing Scene In Moses Life Teach Us?
  1. The incompleteness of human life.
  2. The elusiveness of human life.
C.  How Did Jehovah Take Care Of Moses?
  1. His natural abilities had not abated.
  2. He was allowed to see what God had promised.
  3. He had the privilege of having a Divine funeral director and a Heavenly grave attendant.

'Oh Ye of Little Faith'

Text:  Matthew 6:28-30

Preface:   The Word of God tells us that it is impossible to please God without faith.  Christ rebuked His disciples four times in the Book of Matthew for their 'Little Faith'.  How many blessings have we passed by because of a lack of faith?  Let us look at what Christ had to say to the disciples.

A.  Because They Were Worrying.
  1. Over cares of life;
    a.  About their life (Matthew 6:25).
    b.  About their clothing (Matthew 6:28).
    c.  About their food (Matthew 6:31).
    d.  About their future (Matthew 6:34).
B.  Because They Were Terrified.
  1. They were consumed with fear (Matthew 8:26).
C.  Because They, Were Wavering.
  1. They were listening to Peter.
  2. They were in great doubt (Matthew 14:31).
D.  Because They Lacked Perception.
  1. They were surrounded with dullness (Matthew 16:8).
  2. Christ should bring joy and the joy should multiply.
