What Did the Spirit Produce At Pentecost?

Text:  Acts 2:4

Preface:   Christ said that He must go away, for if He go not away, the Comforter Will not come (John 16:7).  Joel 2:28 tells the Christian "And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour My Spirit upon all flesh".  Oh what promises that Jesus made to the Church.  The only answer for the trouble today is the Power of Jesus Christ through the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.  At Pentecost the Spirit of God produced items that will help Christian's make it through life's journey, let us look at some of these:

A.  Conviction Of Sin.
  1. Peter instructed the people to repent (Acts 2:38).
  2. There is only one mediator among men, Christ (I Timothy 2:5)
B.  Conversion To God.
  1. After repentance, comes Water Baptism (Acts 2:38, Matthew 28: 19).
  2. Peter stated that it doesn't end at repentance.
  3. Peter himself had been reborn and changed even since Calvary.
C.  Continuance In The Ways Of God.
  1. They continued steadfast (Acts 2:42).
  2. The Early Church listened and followed the Apostle's teaching.
  3. They enjoyed unity (Acts 2:46).
D.  Community Of Joyful Christians.
  1. Praising God was a steady diet (Acts 2: 47).
  2. They Enjoyed and Looked for and Expected and Encouraged unity and church growth.
Thought For The Week

Where has the joy gone, and who is responsible for continuing in the joy of the Lord?

The Fiery Furnace Of Affliction

Text:  Daniel 3:24-25

Preface:   The three Hebrew Children had been placed in the Fiery Furnace and everyone around expected a demise of destruction to occur.  There are many today expecting your demise to be one of destruction.  However, we as Christians know the delivering power of Jehovah God, a God that will never forsake His people.  This evening let us study just what fire can and cannot do:

A.  What The Fire Does.
  1. Burns the bands that bind (Matthew 5:11, blessed are you when men revile you).
  2. Affords opportunity to display an upright walk (I Timothy 6:12, "Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life").
  3. Gives a precious experience of the Lord's companionship (John 16:13, "Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth, He will shew you things to come).
  4. Convinces opposers of God's power and providence (Daniel 3:28).
B.  What The Fire Cannot Do.
  1. Cannot harm God's people (II Peter 3 tells us that God is not slack in His promise).
  2. Cannot singe a hair on our head (Daniel 3:27 also in Acts 3, we are told that He will heal us).
  3. Cannot bum the clothes his people wear (Romans 8:26, He helps our infirmities, the Spirit maketh intercession for us).
  4. Cannot leave its smell on us (Psalms 23:4 "yea though I walk through").
Thought For The Week

Just as Christ came to the Three Hebrew children in the furnace, He will come to us today, regardless of our furnace of affliction.

Cisterns In The Sand

Text:  Jeremiah 2:11-13

Preface:   The Prophet Jeremiah combs every figure of speech to get his point across to the people of Judah.  Apostasy runs a strange pattern.  It promises so much and delivers so little.  God tells Jeremiah that "What you are doing doesn't make sense".  You are exchanging the Almighty God of the universe for a bargain basement Barbie doll, a diamond ring, for a daisy chain.  Instead of fresh water from a sparkling fountain, you build cisterns in the sand.  Palestinian cisterns, even the best ones, are likely to crack and leak water.  The water in the cisterns over a period of time will smell and have a color of soapsuds, and in the hour of greatest need it utterly fails.  Jeremiah thought his people had lost their desire for God.  Thus, in Jeremiah's mind, there was a downward progression and he saw it in the following steps:

A.  Step One: Forsaking God.
  1. The spring of living water.
  2. They took God's forgiveness for granted.
B.  Step Two: Going After Other Gods.
  1. Digging cisterns in the sand.
  2. Solomon also chased strange Gods.
C.  Step Three: Having Lost Their Appetite For Jehovah.
  1. Lost respect for His justice.
  2. Stomachs filled with other water (often bad tasting).
  3. Never thinking of the cistern going dry.
D.  Step Four: Having Lost Any Shame For Sin.
  1. Not willing to listen to God's Prophet.
  2. D.L. Moody once said, "This Bible will keep you from sin, or sin will keep you from the Bible".
  3. When people neglect the Word of God, they stop drinking from the Stream of Living Water.
E.  Step Five: Having Committed Themselves To Follow Other Gods.
  1. Their attitude demonstrates the lack of love for God.
  2. Stop Praying and back away from God, sure signs of a life of backsliding.

Hobab And The Treasure Of Moses

Text:  Numbers 10:29-32

Preface:   Moses and company were eleven months out of Egypt, but a long way from "home in the Canaan-to-be".  Moses needed someone to guide him so he turned to his Arab kinsman Hobab and made him an offer, then a bigger offer.  However, Hobab was not to be swayed by treasure, like many today would be.  Moses then, tossed away the treasure story and informed Hobab that he was needed like never before.

A.  A. Need Motivates Better Than Treasure.
  1. Everybody needs to be needed.
  2. Everybody wants somebody to summon up their eyes and talents.
  3. For years we've been courting non-believers with treasure instead of Worship.
  4. Jesus didn't offer that pitch, He offered a cause, a challenge, even a cross.
  5. Remember in calling the Disciples, He told them they were needed.
B.  Everybody Needs A Challenge.
  1. Jesus stated that we are to take up the cross and follow Him (Matthew 10:21).
  2. Challenge is a 3-letter word spelled YES.
C.  Everybody Needs To Contribute.
  1. Jesus said that where your heart is, there will your treasure be.
  2. Oh no, that's not at all the way He put it, He said, "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:21).
  3. Matthew 11: 29, Christ tells us to "Take my yoke".
  4. Do we have any Hobabs here tonight?

Why Not Expect A Miracle

Text:  Genesis 22:5, Acts 2:22

Preface:   Why should we not expect a miracle?  God loves His children and will take care of us just as He supplied the sacrifice for Abraham.  Faith is the means by which God rewards the Child of God.  The Bible tells us much about the faith of Abraham, let us examine three items that touched the heart of God.

A.  Praying.
  1. Luke 18:1 informs the Christian that "Men ought always to pray and not to faint".
  2. Prayer will bring victory in time of battle.
  3. God often allow trials to come to His children to get their attention (Genesis 22:1).
  4. Do you need a miracle?  Pray about it, Pray without ceasing (I Thessalonians 5:17).
B.  Believing.
  1. Mark 9:23 makes it very plain "all things are possible to him that believeth".
  2. Many want to see the miracle first and then they will believe (Matthew 9:29 "According to your faith be it unto you").
  3. According to Genesis 22:5, Abraham informed his two servants that they (plural) would return.
  4. Even though there are trials allowed to Christians, faith makes the difference.
C.  Working.
  1. James 2:17, "Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone".
  2. To be effective, Prayer and faith must be accompanied by action.
  3. Abraham did exactly what God ask him to do (Genesis 22:3).
  4. Jesus is a miracle worker.  He needs to see us Praying, Believing and Working.

Almost Noon

Text:  John 4:4-9

Preface:   Jacob's well is not mentioned in the Old Testament.  The well was a gift to his son Joseph, which Jacob had purchased for 100 pieces of silver.  Although travelers had stopped and refreshed with a cool drink of water, this day in history, a different visitor would visit Jacob's well.  A Samaritan woman would have her life changed while simply coming for a day's supply of water.  Let us look this morning at just what the visitor at noon had to offer:

A.  Why Christ Went To Samaria?
  1. John had been arrested and his disciples scattered (Mark 14:4).
  2. Jesus was on a mission to gather John's disciples together.
  3. It was not custom for a Jew to travel through Samaria.
  4. Jesus will exhaust all means to seek out those who need Him (Revelations 3:20).
B.  Whom Christ Met In Samaria?
  1. Woman shunned by her peers.
  2. She could not understand why Christ would ask her for water (John 4:9).
  3. Christ informed her of the future (John 4:10).
C.  What Christ Explained To Her?
  1. The water out of Jacob's well would satisfy temporary (John 4:13).
  2. The Samaritan woman was introduced to the real water that with which one would thirst no more (John 4:14).
D.  Where Did The Woman Go?
  1. She left her water pot and went to evangelize (John 4:39).
  2. Christ ordained the first woman evangelist in Samaria.
  3. Christ stayed in Revival in Samaria for 2 days (John 4:40).

Tearing Down The Strongholds Of Satan

Text:  I Samuel 30:3-6

Preface:   It is not easy for us to Praise God when our circumstances are to us as a covering of sackcloth and ashes as when they are as the royal robe of unbroken favor and success.  David's alliance with the Philistines brought him into sore trouble, as running with the wrong crowd will do.  Satan is good at aligning us with people that appear to be friends and helpers, but in the long run, they try to pull us down Spiritually and hinder our growth with Christ.  David was favored with God and called upon Him for help, however, let us look at the prelude of the lesson:

A.  A Crushing Disappointment.
  1. David and his men found the city burned (I Samuel 30:3-5).
  2. Wives, sons, daughters, cattle, houses all gone.
  3. They lifted up their voices and wept till they could weep no more (I Samuel 30:6).
  4. The enemy's fire is often needed to waken us up to a true sense of our position in the sight of God.
B.  A Work Of Faith.
  1. "But David encouraged himself in the Lord his God" (I Samuel 30:6).
  2. David comes to himself and turns to God, the spirit of faith again sits on the throne of David's heart (I Samuel 30: 8).
  3. We cannot encourage ourselves much in Him unless we are prepared to submit our way to Him.
C.  An Assuring Promise.
  1. "Pursue, for thou shalt without fail recover all" (I Samuel 30:8).
  2. If God brought you to it, He will see you through it.
D.  A Providential Help.
  1. David had the promise of Jehovah and they found an "Egyptian in the field" (I Samuel 30:11).
  2. Where is the Amalekites?  Who will guide them to their rendezvous?
  3. The poor unfortunate youth, who had to drop out of the ranks of the Amalekites because of sickness will lead them to their quest.
  4. I Corinthians 1:27-28, tells us that "Mighty to the pulling down of the strongholds of satan", what our Lord uses to tear down the walls of satan will fool the wise.
E.  A Complete Victory.
  1. "David recovered all" (I Samuel 30:16-20).
  2. Who else could, he had yielded everything to God, and Jehovah did what He had promised.
  3. His journey was short and the struggle was severe, but the victory was glorious.

Leave The Frogs Alone

Text:  Exodus 8:9-10

Preface:   What if your home was infected with a plague of frogs?  Would you want to wait till tomorrow before calling the exterminator?  In our text we just read, we see the chief executive officer of Egypt saying, "Let me spend one more night with the frogs".  Let them remain in my house for another night and then Pray to your God for deliverance.  Don't you think this was a strange request coming from a King.  Some people have the same attitude; they are contented to spend one more night, one more week or month or year in their deprived condition.  They will put off deliverance until tomorrow.

A.  God's Man Moses.
  1. Exodus 6:30, tells of Moses questioning God about his calling, "And Moses said before the Lord, behold, I am of uncircumcised lips, and how shall Pharaoh hearken unto me?"
  2. Moses was focused on his physical limitations.
  3. God does not need much from us to accomplish the plan He has for our life.
  4. We need to focus on the Mighty Power of God.
B.  Moses Commission.
  1. Moses was prepared to give Pharaoh the proper answer, especially after his experience with the burning bush (Exodus 3:7-10).
  2. Moses was to say, "that the I AM has sent me".
  3. Pharaoh questioned Moses and Aaron,"Who is the Lord that I should obey" (Exodus 5:2).
  4. The devil wants people to believe he can prophesy the future by calling on him instead of God (1-900-PSYCHIC).
  5. Get a word from Heaven for your future.
  6. When put to the test, Moses used the power of God concerning the rod against the power of the devil.
C.  The Plague Of Frogs.
  1. When Pharaoh went home that evening, a frog greeted him, they were everywhere, just as God had said (Exodus 8:1-3).
  2. Pharaoh needed a Word from God just as we need today.
  3. When faced with the devil, we do not need enchantments, sorcery or evil spirits.
  4. What is needed today is the same power Moses used, GOD's POWER.
Thought:  Would you not agree that Pharaoh would have been better off if he had gotten rid of the frogs the same day that Moses confronted him?  Why do we let satan keep sin in our lives day after day?  Make this the day that you purpose to get rid of the frogs in your life.

How Many Loaves Do You Have?

Text:  Mark 6

Preface:   In Mark chapter 6 we read of Christ showing compassion on the multitude by not letting them go hungry.  We should remember that He is the same yesterday, today and forever.  If Christ cared for the crowd then, He will care for us today.  He ask the disciples a question that day, "Do you have any bread", the same question is asked of us today:

A.  To Make Us Aware Of What We Possess.
  1. The disciples explained that they did not have enough funds to buy food sufficient to feed such a crowd (Mark 6:37).
  2. Samson was not aware of what he possessed until he received a hair cut.
  3. Adam must have missed the Garden of Eden daily.
  4. The disciples ask Christ to send the crowd off so that they could buy their own food (man's way of doing things).
B.  To Force Us To Pool Our Resources.
  1. Christ explained that a small amount of food when surrendered to Him, could produce a vast amount. (Mark 6:38).
  2. Christ asked them to be seated in ranks of fifties and one-hundred, so it was easy to see the miracle He had brought to life.
  3. He wanted the others to understand that all had been fed alike.
C.  To Help Us To Understand The Value Of Fragments.
  1. Christ blessed the food and divided.
  2. Ask the disciples to take up the leftovers.
  3. Twelve baskets of fragments were collected.
  4. If the lad had not the fragments to begin with, what a miracle would have been missed.
  5. Remember when God told Abraham that from him would be a great nation.
  6. Remember when God called twelve disciples and turned this world up side down.
  7. Remember when God caused the blood of one son to wash away the sin of your life.
  8. Don't be guilty of throwing away your fragments and miss a miracle.
