Prelude To A Great Victory

Text:  I Kings 17 1:1-5

Preface:   The Prophet Elijah was sent to Zareparth to be sustained by the fowls of the air.  Not exactly what Elijah would probably order for himself, however God's way is not man's way.  When facing conflict with the devil, we oftentimes do not take prelude precaution before the battle.  Let us tonight look at some qualities that a Christian must do in order to prepare for victory;

A.  Steal Away To A Quiet Place.
  1. So that God may speak to your soul (I Kings 17:3).
  2. Elijah was facing a battle with Ahab (Chapter 18).
  3. God was looking past the Brook at Cherith.
B.  Absolute Dependence On God.
  1. Quit worrying, God is in control, or is He?
  2. God was sending Elijah on to Zareparth (I Kings 17:9).
  3. The widow had to depend on God and believe in Elijah (I Kings 17:13).
C.  Absolute Surrender To God.
  1. Elijah had to rely completely on Jehovah.
  2. The widow had to rely completely on Jehovah.
  3. Remember, only God knew what was in the future.
D.  God Will Supply All Need.
  1. From vultures to disheartened widows, God will use whatever necessary (Philippians 4:19).
  2. When God has a mission for His child, He can schedule the itinerary.
E.  Enjoy The Great Power God Will Give You.
  1. Elijah scored a victory by the help of God.
  2. However, God required Elijah to get alone with Him and trust Him for all.

Waiting For The Rapture

Text:  I Thessalonians 1:10

Preface:   The Rapture or Catching Away of the Saints of God will be the most spectacular item to ever grace the atmosphere.  Jesus will summons all the saved people, both dead and living to come join Him in a home "Not made by man".  We will enter through one of the twelve gates of Heaven and see all the glorious creation that our Heavenly Father has prepared for His children.  My question to you this evening is, "How many of you are home sick"?

A.  The Church Waits For Jesus.
  1. Christ will most certainly wait for us on that day (I Thessalonians 1:10).
  2. Christ tells us to not let "That day come upon us unaware" (Luke 21:35).
  3. Both dead and living saints will see Christ (I Thessalonians 4:13-18).
B.  The Church Will Be Taken To Glory.
  1. He tells us to walk worthy, for we are going to His home as invited guests (I Thessalonians 2:12).
  2. "When Christ appears we will go with Him (Colossians 3:4).
C.  Some Will Have Joy.
  1. Soul winners will have great joy at this event (I Thessalonians 2:19-20).
  2. Some will be very sad and depressed at this event.
D.  Saints Will Be Established.
  1. Saints will be established blameless (I Thessalonians 3:13).
  2. We will be established in Holiness.
E.  Saved People Will Escape Wrath.
  1. God's later day wrath will be on those who are not watching but are asleep (I Thessalonians 5:1-11).
  2. Nowhere is the church mentioned as to being on earth after the rapture (Revelations 4:1).
F.  We Will Be Made Whole.
  1. Saints will be made whole in body, soul and spirit at the time of the Rapture (I Thessalonians 5:23, Philippians 3:21).

Let's Go Down To Bethany

Text:  John 11:14

Preface:   Lazarus, a friend of Jesus had died. His sisters and family were stricken in grief.  Christ himself stated that Lazarus was indeed dead.  However, He also stated that Lazarus was sleeping and God would get the glory out of this situation.  If we will allow God, He will get glory in our lives.  We were created for the "Glory of God".  This morning let us take a little journey back 2000 years to this little town called Bethany.  As we study the Word today, let us as much as we can, place ourselves standing at the tomb where Lazarus was laid.

A.  Lazarus is Dead.
  1. The Word tells us that we are "Dead in sin and trespasses" (Ephesians 2:1).
  2. The sisters notified Christ that Lazarus was sick (John 11:3).
  3. Jesus said, "This sickness is not unto death" (John 11:4).
  4. Jesus did not go to Bethany on their time but His time "Abode two more days in this place" (John 11:6).
  5. Thomas was real faithful as usual, "Let us go that we may die also" (John 11:16).  He thought Christ would be killed.
B.  He That Was Dead Came Forth.
  1. Lazarus had been laid to rest fully clothed with the cords and binding strings (John 11:44).
  2. Martha rushed out to meet Christ and informed Him that if He had been there, Lazarus would not have died.
  3. How many times in our own lives, do we accuse Christ of not acting fast enough or not even caring.
  4. Mary also told Christ that he was late (John 11:32).
  5. Jesus Christ saw their tears and commanded the stone be moved away.
  6. He then commanded Lazarus to leave his temporary resting place and rejoin the living (John 11:43-44).
C.  Let Us Go See Lazarus.
  1. Lazarus not only came forth out of the grave but was hungry from his rest (John 12:2).
  2. Jesus tells us that we shall live again "Though he were dead yet shall he live" (John 11:25).
  3. John 12:9 tells us that people came to see the miracle that Jesus had performed. People want to see the miracle that Christ has worked in our own lives.

Transformed By Faith

Note: This message was preempted by a mighty move of the Holy Spirit.

Text:  Luke 5:5

Preface:   Many Christians today are discouraged and feel like giving up.  However God is still in charge and does not want us to surrender to satan.  The Word teaches us that we are to be "Doers of the Word and not hearers only" (James 1:21-25).  We say that we believe what the Word says, but we do not practice with Fruit Bearing.

A.  Many Have Toiled All Night.
  1. We continue to struggle with problems and cares of life.
  2. Christ desires us to cast all our care upon Him.
  3. Those that cast their cares upon Him and received help and compassion:
    1. Job (9:4).
    2. Daniel (6:22).
    3. Paul (I Corinthians 1:9).
B.  Belief In Action Transforms Faith Into Reality.
  1. Impossible to please God without faith (Hebrews 11:6).
  2. Jesus transformed Faith when He was on earth (Luke 7:50)
  3. "He shall be like a tree planted by the waters" (Psalm 1).
  4. Simon Peter believed in Christ and did exactly as He asked him (Luke 5:5).
  5. The vast number of fish would not have been present without obedience.
C.  Receive a Transfusion Tonight.
  1. Believe that Christ is able and willing to help you.
  2. Put this into action.
  3. Stop informing satan of your thoughts and actions (Proverbs 28:1).
  4. Praise God from whom ALL BLESSINGS FLOW.

Digging Deep

Text:  Luke 6:46-49

Preface:   There are three words that characterize a wise man in the eyes of Jesus Christ.  "Whosoever Cometh to Me, and Heareth My sayings, Doeth them" (Luke 6:47).  To Come to Him as a Savior, to Hear Him as a teacher, and to Obey Him as a Master is the evidence that we have been and are being taught of God and made wise in Christ.  We are going this morning to study about two builders.  They represent two great classes or conditions of men.  Those who live by faith on the Son of God, and those who walk in the light of the sparks of their own kindling.  Let us call it Wisdom and Foolishness.

A.  The Wisdom Of The Obedient.
  1. Our Lord tells us that "He who built an house and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock," is a wise man because;
    1. Because he believed in the rock, has no faith in sandy soil (Luke 6:48).
    2. Because he spared no trouble to get at the rock, even a little dust will hinder the cement to set together.
    3. Because he built his house upon it after he found the rock, he was not simply satisfied with merely finding a good foundation.
    4. Because he was not disappointed with the results,"The foundation of God standeth sure" (II Timothy 2:19).
B.  The Foolishness Of The Disobedient.
  1. "He that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth" (Luke 6:49).
  2. The foolishness of this man is seen in that;
    1. He disregarded the rock, if we wish to end with Christ, we must begin with Him.
    2. He commenced building too soon, he began to plant the stones of hope before he had found the rock of safety.
    3. He built without a foundation.
    4. His hopes were suddenly cut off; it is too late to build another house when the flood has come (Malachi 4:1, II Thessalonians 1:8).

Under His Wings

Text:  Psalm 91:1-9

Preface:   Have you ever pondered the thought of "What it would be like to not have God's provincial care?"  Yet we often confuse or misuse the great and wonderful care that our Father extends to His children.  No doubt that the 91st Psalm has been a strong arm for the broken hearted to lean upon.  Let us look closer at the real meaning of this powerful Psalm.

A.  This Psalm Is Known As.
  1. The Psalm of life (Psalm 91:2).
  2. Christ quoted verse 11 while under the temptation of satan (Matthew 4:6).
  3. William Shakespeare once said, "The devil doth quote Scripture."
B.  He Covers Us.
  1. Like a bird or mother hen (Psalm 91:4).
  2. Like others in the Word.
    1. Lot out of Sodom (Genesis 19).
    2. Jonah out of the fish (Jonah 2).
    3. Multitude of 4000 out of hunger (Matthew 15).
    4. Paul out of shipwreck
C.  Thou Shalt Not Be Afraid (Psalm 91:5).
  1. This world may shoot arrows at the Christian, but Christ is our shield.
  2. His truth is our shield and buckler (Psalm 91:4).
  3. Even the terror of the darkest night is no match for our Lord.
  4. Our enemies shall gather all around us, but harm shall not come (Psalm 91:7).
Thought:  How many long nights have we stayed without sleep because of worry?  How many day's have we gone with the same burden on our heart, not willing to lay it at the Master's feet?  Let us place ALL OUR TRUST in Christ Jesus.

Paul's Thorn In The Flesh

Note: This message was preempted by a mighty move of the Holy Spirit.

Text:  II Corinthians 12:7-10

Preface:   One of the most popular reasons for denial of healing today is the broadly accepted misunderstanding of a key passage of Scripture, the II Corinthians 12 account of Paul's thorn in the flesh.  Does this incident teach that sick people should remain in the grip of their sickness, that they should neither pray for nor expect God's healing of their affliction?

A.  Biblical Justification Of This Claim.
  1. People who don't believe in Divine Healing, think that Paul is saying that God will not heal his illness.
  2. Expositors have attempted to identify Paul's thorn with any number of sicknesses and physical conditions.
    1. partial blindness.
    2. acute ophthalmia.
    3. epilepsy.
    4. migraine headaches.
  3. Other than a couple of references that hint that Paul's eyesight might have troubled him from time to time, no Scriptural basis is found for any of these claims.
  4. The severe terms in which he describes his thorn makes it sound much more serious than not possessing 20/20 vision.
  5. Some even go beyond the suggestion of physical affliction and conjecture that the thorn was some type of Spiritual malady that plagued the great Apostle.
  6. Both the conjectured physical illnesses and the Spiritual ailments are curiously not mentioned anywhere in the New Testament books from Paul's pen.
B.  Expositors Have Overlooked The Obvious.
  1. Paul tells exactly in plain words what it was.
  2. The thorn in the flesh was a messenger of satan sent to constantly battle him.
  3. Paul's tormentor was a representative of satan's kingdom who continually followed Paul about in an attempt to hinder him, obstruct him and destroy him.
  4. The messenger of satan was sent to "buffet" him. The word means "to strike with the fist".
  5. I Corinthians 4:11, tells us that Paul suffered from;
    1. hunger.
    2. thirst.
    3. poorly clothed.
    4. beaten ( same Greek word as "buffeted").
    5. homeless.
C.  Paul Was Certainly A Target Of The Enemy.
  1. However, a man who traveled the distance that Paul did, could not have suffered as a chronically sick man.
  2. The messenger of satan had buffeted him;
    1. shipwrecked.
    2. arrested.
    3. stoned.
  3. Paul identified it as a demonic spirit whose mission was to give him a hard time.
  4. Paul was an Apostle who knew how much he had to depend on God.
Thought:  Paul's thorn in the flesh was a demonic angel charged to hinder Paul's ministry. By God's grace Paul was made strong enough to do God's will. He completed his ministry with a resounding report of victory!

I have fought the good fight,
    I have finished the race,
    I have kept the faith.
